Dr. Patel is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center where she is the Director of the Gastrointestinal Hereditary Cancer Program. Her clinical and research interests are in  early-age onset colorectal cancer and improving identification and management of individuals with hereditary cancer syndromes.

She is active in professional organizations dedicated to cancer risk reduction, including serving on the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable (NCCRT) Steering Committee and is a past president of the Collaborative Group of the Americas on Inherited GI Cancers. She sits on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Colorectal Cancer Screening Guideline Committee, and is a member of the United States Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer, where she led the updated guidelines supporting expanding colorectal cancer screening to 45-49-year-olds.

Her research program is supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the University of Colorado Cancer Center.
