Dr. Woodward is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology with a secondary appointment in Medicine/ Nephrology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, in Baltimore. His research focus is on the biology of urate transport in the kidney and other epithelial tissues. Dr. Woodward received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Virginia and his PhD from the University of Washington. His PhD worked centered on increasing our understanding of how epithelial function was coordinated, an interest that he continued as a Fellow at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Physiology. At Hopkins, Dr. Woodward focused on the ABCG2 transporter, and its role in urate transport. In 2015, Dr. Woodward joined the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine where his laboratory utilizes human genetics, mouse models, renal physiology, and molecular biology to better understand the mechanisms of urate homeostasis and risk for hyperuricemia and gout.
