Marie Wahren-Herlenius, Karolinska Institute, Sweden
Marie Wahren-Herlenius is a clinician scientist with expertise in autoimmune diseases. She holds a position as professor of experimental rheumatology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and has made contributions to understanding the pathogenesis of Sjögren’s syndrome by defining genetic and immunological elements underlying the nature and quality of patient B cell responses and Ro/La autoantibody generation. Her recent work includes studies of the congenital heart block that may develop in the fetus following placental transfer of the maternal Ro/La autoantibodies, as well as projects relating to sex differences in systemic autoimmune disease.
Wahren-Herlenius currently leads a research group at the Center for Molecular Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, and has received several awards for her work, including an INGVAR award from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, a Distinguished Professor Award at Karolinska Institutet, the Göran Gustafsson prize in Medicine as well as the Nanna Svartz price.
