His research interests include the epidemiology and prevention of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. He has contributed to many landmark studies and is involved in epidemiological research across many countries. He initiated and led the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study, the first proper controlled trial on type 2 diabetes prevention, demonstrating a 58% reduction in incidence with lifestyle intervention. These experiences were used to design many diabetes prevention activities globally. He developed a simple, non-laboratory diabetes risk score (FINDRISC) that is the most commonly used diabetes screening tool. He has contributed to over 2000 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is among the most-cited authors in the field of diabetes worldwide.
