Dr. Gu Can is a Professor of Nursing and Associate Dean of Xiangya School of Nursing, Central South University. She has nearly 30 years of professional experience spanning clinical nursing and university teaching. She earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Nursing from Central South University, and her Ph.D. in Nursing from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She completed a one-and-a-half-year postdoctoral fellowship at Yale School of Nursing and a three-year postdoctoral appointment at Xiangya Hospital, Central South University.

Between September 2020 and March 2022, she was dispatched by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee to support nursing development in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, serving as Associate Dean of the School of Nursing at Xinjiang Medical University during that period. She is deeply committed to nurturing competent and compassionate nurses to advance nursing and health care in western China.

As principal investigator on multiple university-funded and national grants, her research focuses on stress responses and psychosocial interventions for cancer survivors, including children with cancer, across multi-site studies conducted in mainland China—with particular attention to populations in Xinjiang. She has published over 95 peer-reviewed papers in national and international refereed journals, and over the past 10 years has been awarded more than 15 external competitive research grants, including two from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
